Friendship as practice

Being anointed as the esteemed animal of truffle pig, Simon said a lot of juicy parts:

  • “passion is an output, not an input.”
  • “the thing I’m obsessing about right now, is friendship.” [not better leaders, better parents, better sleep, better eating …]
  • “the times i slipped, tripped, hit rock bottom, it wasn’t work … but by the grace of some higher power that some friend saw it and picked me up.”
  • “I can make a sacrifice against my career for my friends.”
  • “I love to see what you’re sniffing around in because I believe it is connected to something far greater.”
  • “if we have close friendships and live in community, we are less susceptible to addiction.”
  • “if we taught our children how to be friends, they are less likely to get addicted.”
  • “we are teaching people how to do everything…. The one thing we aren’t doing is the old-fashioned, hard, slow thing of making friends.”
  • “the way to know that those things matter — has anybody done that for you.”
  • “that’s such a common misunderstanding: I didn’t want to burden you; I didn’t want to bother you. We don’t build trust by offering help, we build trust by asking for it.”
  • “You asshole. How dare you be so selfish of denying me the honor of showing up for you in your time of need.”
  • “In the world today, there’s been a total loss of idealism.”

At one point, Noah asks two rhetorical questions with clauses:

What am I, beyond what I do?

Who am I, because of who I am around?
